The former Matsumoto City Hall

The former Matsumoto City Hall was completed in 1913. Surrounded by traditional Japanese houses, it was a symbol of “Taisho Romanticism” in which Western art and lifestyle was fused with traditional Japanese culture.

In front of the former city hall, there were many stores lined up along Agetsuchi Street, many of which were built in the Taisho era (1912-1926) with Western-style architecture.

In the Agetsuchi-area, there are still many buildings that retain the appearance of Taisho Romanticism.
